Inspiring leaders from Hungary's homeless

LYNN [August 14]: Picture the Homeless came to Budapest primarily to offer as much support as possible to homeless folks and their allies, as they work to strengthen skills in grassroots organizing. One of the most striking and moving aspects of our trip has been getting to know some strong homeless leaders here, who are leaders in their own right, in their own lives -- and how they have come together in what is actually just a short time, and have the hunger to start an organization to fight for their rights, and even to think through what those rights might look like on a daily real-world, not just on-paper, basis.

We had a speaking engagement at a community center/pub in Budapest (Gödör Klub -- a really cool space that I wish we had back in NYC!) and two men from our workshops spoke for the first time in their lives in public. There is NOTHING that I can think of that would have improved their comments, their body language, their entire vibe -- they were amazing and very moving, and affirmed for us the whole reason for coming here. I committed myself to come back and dance at the victory party when they win their first campaign -- which is totally do-able, all the ingredients are here. img width="512" height="384" src="/home/pictur11/public_html/blog/files/image/godor%20klub%20(5).JPG" alt="" />
