Linda, 24, Shelter resident. 8 months pregnant, from the Bronx but grew up in South Carolina, has worked with AHRC w/ autistic kids & seniors, 14 weeks of custodial maintenance training, worked on stipend at Bellevue Hospital. Worked as a messenger for 5 months, but had to quit to deal with family issues. Likes writing poetry, reading, answering phones, hanging out with family. 9/7/07 What’s your story? Hi, my name is Carlos J. Quinoñes. I’m presently homeless at this time. I was living with my wife’s sister in South Carolina for a while until she decide to kick me out. I tried to go back to my home town Flemington New Jersey, to try to apply for welfare, but I got turned away. Because I came from out of state. Finally my wife came back from South Carolina because she couldn’t raise her unborn child by herself. We decided to come to her home town, Bronx New York. We went to Path, a homeless intake center for family. They had placed us in a shelter for over 30 days. Then they said to us we can stay at my wife friend house, who is a NYCHA resident. That me and my wife can sleep on the sofa and when the baby is born so can the baby sleep with us. That’s totally against NYCHA’s rules. The staff at Path is very cold hearted towards me & my wife. I’ve been homeless at least 3 years. My wife was staying at an all female shelter at one point in time. Now we’re trying out best to get out of being homeless and raise a family the best way possible. I still keep my faith with the lord. What’s happening now? I’m startin to get some help now, from Picture the Homeless. They been telling us where to go and who I should talk to. If not for them I would’ve landed in jail. Because I was starting to get scared. No idea of what to do. I always give thanks to Picture the Homeless for everything they had done for me & my wife. Now I’m fighting a good fight to end homelessness in New York and hopefully we can end homelessness across the USA. I’m not scared no more. I’m just prayin and hoping for the best with me & my wife’s problems. That shelter should get shut down. People do drugs in front of the shelter, the staff some weed outside. One time Linda fell down the steps, and when I went looking for the shelter manager he was outside washing his car. If I wanted to be a moron, I could’ve sued, but… It’s a bad place. Thank you! Carlos J. Quiñones & Linda Narzario
