This Week's Political Education Reading: "Domestic Workers in New York Win First-Ever Job Protections," by Tiffany Ten Eyck

 * Every week at the Homeless Organizing Academy, we have a discussion about a political education reading. These are very short pieces - poems, history lessons, famous speeches, excerpts from books. Each week's reading is chosen based on Academy students' feedback: what do they want to learn more about? What do they know a lot about, and want to teach others?

For homeless folks who were not able to attend this week's session, we are posting next week's reading here. Check it out, get your thoughts together, and come to Tuesday night's session ready to discuss it! 6pm at 2427 Morris Avenue, Bronx NY. 4 or D train to Fordham Road. 

This week's reading is an article about the recent passage of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, which is probably THE biggest victory in the New York social justice movement of the past ten years. We're reading it in advance of next week's super-exciting GUEST LECTURE from members of Domestic Workers United who will tell us all about LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY. 

"Domestic workers in New York have won historic changes to the state’s labor law to include protections for their jobs. Final votes on Thursday ended weeks of wrangling between state Assembly and Senate leaders and Governor David Paterson, who said he would sign the bill....

Domestic workers and advocates have been holding their breath since June 1..."
