Faith Community outreach efforts at Picture the Homeless evolved from our very successful Potter's Field Campaign.
Our Potter's Field Campaign resulted in a network (Interfaith Friends of Potter's Field) of faith leaders representing a broad range of faith communities. Those faith leaders worked closely with Picture the Homeless to successfully lobby for access to Hart Island for regular memorial services for deceased homeless and indigent. Today, they continue to provide pastoral support for these memorial services and to homeless New Yorkers mournng the loss of those close to them who are buried on Hart Island.
The next logical question was to what degree faith communities' natural inclination towards justice would move them to stand in solidarity with homeless New Yorkers to challenge the systems of injustice that both cause and exacerbate the experience of homelessness.
Several faith leaders and communities of faith have already signed on to work side-by-side with homeless New Yorkers to promote objectives of our campaigns.
