People experiencing homelessness face many different challenges, often all at the same time! If you or someone you know is in a crisis in New York City, please check out the following resources and referrals to services that might be helpful to you.

Contact one of the HomeBase service providers, funded by the NYC Department of Homeless Services to prevent households at risk of homelessness from entering shelter. Call 311 for the HomeBase provider closest to you.
I need to leave a domestic violence situation.

I am leaving shelter and I’m in the process of moving into a new apartment, but I don’t have any furniture.

However, they no longer provide free furniture. Instead furniture is sold at a discounted price from a store and the client is responsible for the entire cost as well as the delivery fee. Likewise the client must have a valid email address for the catalog to be sent to.
I have a Section 8 voucher, and a landlord has refused to accept it.

My shelter is not helping me!
The Office of Client Advocacy at the NYC Department of Homeless Services is supposed to keep the shelters in line, and help out homeless folks who are having problems with the system. They have an 800 number: 1-800-994-6494. The director of that department is named Susan Nayowith, and her direct line is 212-232-0548. *

I am unemployed and having a hard time paying rent.
Come to the Homeless Organizing Academy, every Tuesday at 5PM at Picture the Homeless, for free job trainings to pursue employment as a community organizer!
I don’t have an email address or know how to use the internet, and it’s making it hard to find a job.
